Imagine what was it like for that little girl to live knowing that her own father (a veterinarian) ordered to put Thomasina to sleep (although everyone in their small Scottish town believed that he could have saved the poor little thing!)

Now, since you know all of this, keep in mind that the little girl (who is now shattered by the loss of her cat), also lost her own mother years ago, and since that time was raised by her father (the veterinarian), who, she believed, loved her, his only daughter, dearly. She sincerely believed that until now...

The little girl has lost her faith in her father since he didn't even try to treat her sick cat but simply ordered to put Thomasina to sleep. So she herself doesn't want to live in this world anymore...
