"Because of Winn-Dixie" is a bestselling children's book written by award-winning writer Kate DiCamillo. It won the Newberry award and was turned into a popular family film in 2005.
The story starts when a lonely 10-year-old girl encounters a scruffy dog making a lot of havoc in a Winn-Dixie supermarket. India Opal (that's the girl's name) claims the dog is hers to save him from going to the pound and names him Winn-Dixie.
India has just moved into a trailer park in the small town of Naomi, Florida, with her preacher father. Since Winn-Dixie soon becomes friends with everyone he encounters, this encourages the little girl to make new friends, too. The very special dog, "who can even smile", helps the girl to rekindle a strained relationship with her father, who raises her alone...
