...The dog named Kashtanka belongs to a carpenter who takes her out one day, but loses on the way home.  The dog is picked up on the street by an old man who takes him to the circus where Kashtanka becomes a part of an act, along with other circus animals.

Some time later the dog's original owner brings his son to the circus show, where they recognize Kashtanka and call her by her name. Kashtanka immediately drops her "Auntie" stage persona and follows them home...

The other stories in the book are "Children" (Detvora), "Boys" (Malchiki), "The Boy Named Van'ka", "The Dog with the White Forehead" (Belolobyi) and "Chameleon".
