The book's main character, the porcelain rabbit Edward Tulane, is given to a ten-year-old girl by her grandmother. He enjoys a pleasant but vain life until an unfortunate incident finds him falling overboard while vacationing with his wealthy family on an ocean liner.  After being pulled out of the dark waters by a fisherman several months later, Edward starts a new life when the poor fisherman's wife dresses him as a female rabbit and gives him a new name, Susanna. 

Edward will change several owners throughout his life journey. There will be tragic moments, there will be some happy times. His journeys will not only take him far from home, but even farther from the selfish rabbit he once was. He will learn the value of love and loss, and the undeniable message that loving and losing is better than never having loved at all.

Although this book is recommended for ages 9 to 12, the story will touch the hearts of young adults (as well of some children under 9 if read to them aloud).  The excellent novel by Kate DiCamillo has won several awards including "Parent's Choice Award" in 2006.
