The book contains five treasured fairy tales written in verse by Alexander Pushkin.

"The Tale of Tsar Saltan", which opens the book, begins with "three fair maidens", who "late one night, sat and spun by candlelight"... The youngest of these three sisters marries the Tsar. Soon after that her jealous siblings decide to seal her and her then new-born son, Prince Guidon, into a barrel and cast them into the sea. Fortunately, the magical Swan appears to help the castaways...

The following are "The Tale of the Fisherman and the Golden Fish", "The Tale of the Golden Cockerel", "The Tale of the Priest and His Servant Balda",  and "The Tale of the Dead Princess and the Seven Knights", the storyline in which is somewhat similar to that of Snow White, with the knights replacing the dwarfs.

There is also an excerpt from "Ruslan and Lyudmila" and a vocabulary of rare and outdate Russian words in the back of this book.
